Octopus Energy is starting an Invitation only scheme today for selected Smart Meter customers to help with the current situation in the UK, where there is an abundance of renewable energy and limited commercial requirement due to COVID-19. This weekend there is set to be a record low demand for energy combined with lots of renewable energy being produced which means that some renewable sources may have to be shut down temporarily. Social distancing measures have led to a record low energy demand on the electrical supply grid as businesses and factories have been shutting their doors to comply with the government.
Octopus Energy is running a special invitation-only trial to see if customers can help use some of the oversupplies off electricity to the grid between an allocated slot on Sunday 10th May. They will pay the consumer 2 Pence per kWh used during this time for eligible customers who have received an email and signed up to the trial.
Included in the invite they say that this may not be a one-off as the UK’s electrical grid gets greener and greener with more solar wind and renewable energy and using less coal and oil to generate power there will be more instances where the supply outmatches demand on the energy industry are trying to find ways to meet this challenge.
