Long Distance Road Trip

Range Anxiety Be Gone

Last week was my first long-distance trip since owning my Model 3 that I have taken. The trip was over 330 miles from Derbyshire to London and back.

The trip was extremely smooth for the most part and the only "bump in the road" was the time that AP saw the shadow of a bridge and decided to try and perform an emergency stop in lane 3 of the M1 (Quick reactions to accelerate helped).

The expected journey using ABRP had said that I would need to stop twice to get home with 15% SOC. I had set the W/Mile to 280 as a buffer to see the worst case. I planned to stop at Newport Pagnell on the way down and then Heathrow T5 on the way back.

I arrived at the Newport Pagnell Supercharger with 60% and all of the stalls were empty. I nipped inside to quickly use the restroom and came back to the car about 30 mins later to 95% SOC costing only £5.28. I arrived in London and later that afternoon I got back in my car to come home and I set the navigation to home with no stops and I would have 6%. I set the AP to 65/MPH as I knew there were road works for a portion of the home journey.

In summary, I arrived home with 30% remaining and a surprised look on my face. I have always had range anxiety since going electric even going 100 miles and I can safely say that it has now been abolished. Only cost me around £11.33 to complete the trip including the SC stop worked out at 3.4P / Mile which is not bad going.
